Ascension to hold Public Meeting for Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

Ascension Parish OHSEP, in partnership with the Stephenson Disaster Management Institute at LSU, has been updating The Ascension Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan, which recognizes the various naturally occurring risks to the region, and outlines strategies to reduce these risks to save lives, reduce property damage, and lessen the impact of future disasters. They are seeking community input for the 2020 Ascension Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan update. 

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires all states and local governments to have a hazard mitigation plan in order to be eligible to apply for certain types of federal hazard mitigation project grants. Hazard mitigation plans must be ongoing and updated every five years to ensure that they remain true representations of local risk and locally-preferred risk reduction strategies.

The group will host an online public meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm to provide information about the plan and invite public input on the risks and vulnerabilities that most impact people and property in Ascension Parish. People who are passionate about building a more resilient future for their parish, or those who have ideas about how to reduce risks and better navigate disasters are invited to participate. The Parish appreciates any public input and encourages your virtual attendance at this meeting. Access information will be provided on Tuesday, May 19 at

Residents of Ascension Parish are asked to participate in a survey about public perceptions and opinions regarding natural hazards in the parish.  The survey results will be used in the development of the plan.
