Donaldsonville awarded $260,000 grant for road safety action plan: U.S. Dept. of Transportation

Donaldsonville, Louisiana

Donaldsonville was the only community in Louisiana to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Road for All grant program.

The city was awarded $260,000 in the program's first of two rounds with additional grant awards expected to be announced in December.

According to an Oct. 27 news release, the department announced a total of $82 million in grants to 235 regional, local, and Tribal communities for planning and demonstration projects to improve safety and help prevent death and serious injuries on roadways.

Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan provided further information on the City of Donaldsonville Safety Action Plan, which has a primary goal to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of road safety issues in the historic Ascension Parish west bank municipality.

The objective is to address various challenges associated with transportation infrastructure throughout the city of about 6,695 residents.

The project aims to record and analyze data with the purpose of providing evidence-based recommendations for improving roadway, pedestrian, and bicycle safety in the city.

According to the release, the funds will help communities throughout the country develop safety action plans, inform improvements along corridors with safety issues, use quick-build strategies to test safety features, and more.
